    HISTORICAL ORIGIN OF GHASSOUL

In Morocco there is a clay called "saponiferous" used for centuries and probably since the Middle Ages (12th and 13th centuries) by all the populations of North Africa and even in certain regions of the Middle East. This clay is called Ghassoul and this term finds its origin in the verb "Rassala" which means to wash in Arabic. This clay is extracted in underground mine galleries.

THE GHASSOUL AND THE MOROCCAN TRADITION

Ghassoul or Moroccan clay has been part of the ancestral tradition and customs of Morocco and Tunisia for many decades. In Tunisia it is called ''Tfal'', and it continues to be an essential product in the hammam (bath) ritual today.

Women always carry the ghassoul in their bath set, with the black soap and Arab bath gloves.

We could go out on a limb and say that it is a comprehensive beauty ritual. The recipes and preparation methods are passed down from generation to generation, both in Morocco and Tunisia. Ghassoul is mixed with orange blossom water, rose water and essential oils to enhance the fragrance and its moisturizing qualities. In the offerings of Moroccan weddings, ghassoul, with milk and henna cannot be missing. Ghassoul is also used by pregnant women for stomach acidity.
